What hot-tire pickup means
Hot-tire pickup is what happens when a coating lifts or does not fully bond right where a tire sits. It is a sign the concrete underneath was not opened up enough for the coating to grip into, not a sign the coating itself failed.
The name makes it sound like the tire is the problem. It is really a name for where the failure shows up first, because a tire is the heaviest, hottest thing that regularly sits still on a garage floor.
Nothing else in a typical garage combines that much weight, that much heat, and that little movement in one spot for hours at a time. That is why a weak bond usually shows up under a tire long before it shows up anywhere else on the same floor.
It is worth naming plainly, since a homeowner searching for this is usually staring at a real spot on a real floor, not asking out of curiosity.
Why acid etching causes it
Acid etching opens the surface of the concrete chemically instead of mechanically. It is faster and cheaper than grinding, and it is the reason a lot of garage floors fail in year two. It does not open the slab the way a diamond grind does, so the coating sits closer to the surface instead of gripping into it.
A floor coated over an acid-etched slab can look fine for months, sometimes longer, before the first sign of a problem shows up. That delay is part of why it gets used: the shortcut does not announce itself right away.
By the time the first spot lifts, the floor has usually already had a summer or two of hot tires and Houston humidity working against a bond that was never solid to begin with.
Why diamond grinding prevents it
Diamond grinding takes off the top layer of concrete and gives the coating something to bite into instead of sitting on top of it. That mechanical bond is what keeps a hot tire from lifting the coating loose, and it is why we grind every garage, no exceptions.
Cracks, pits, and spalls get filled and ground flush as part of the same step, so there is no soft or uneven spot left for a coating to bond poorly around.
There is no shortcut version of this step on a Somar floor. It is the same grind whether the garage is a one-car space or a three-car bay, because the mechanical bond it creates is what everything else depends on.
The topcoat matters too
A polyaspartic topcoat is built for the heat a tire carries in, on top of a base that is already bonded right. The two things work together: grip from the grind, resistance from the topcoat.
A good grind under a topcoat that is not built for tire heat is still a weak combination, just a different failure point. Both halves of the system have to hold up their end.
That is also why we do not treat this as a checklist of one fix. A floor that grinds right and seals right is doing two things correctly at once, not one thing twice.
Give a new floor time before you park
Even a properly ground and sealed floor needs the topcoat to fully harden before a hot tire rolls onto it. Foot traffic is fine the next morning, bikes and boxes after a day, but cars wait a couple of days. That gap is the cure finishing before the toughest use the floor will see, not a sign it is fragile.
Once that window has passed, a correctly prepped floor is not sitting there waiting to fail the first time a hot tire parks on it. The extra couple of days is the one piece of patience the whole job asks for.
Most of the calls about a mark on a new floor turn out to be exactly this: a car back in the garage a day earlier than the schedule called for, not a sign the coating is bad.
If you already have a floor that is lifting

A floor that lifted from a past acid-etch job is a different situation than a brand new floor that had a car parked on it too soon, and the two get treated differently once he has seen it.
